The Story of Math Antics
In 2008 two long-time friends, Rob and Jeremy, began dabbling in math video production. At the time, Jeremy was involved with homeschooling his children and was having trouble finding math resources that were simple, effective and highly engaging. He and Rob had a history of working together on various projects, so they put their heads together in hopes of developing a math video format that would meet all those requirements. After a lot of trial and error, they eventually decided that the key was to ‘animate’ math so it would actually ‘come to life’ for students. They also realized that adding a little bit of humor could go a long way towards making math more enjoyable. In short, the idea for a video series called “Math Antics” was born.
The two set out to make that idea a reality and in 2010, they started a small business in Southern California called Math Plus Motion, LLC. They figured that Rob’s background in Programming, Animation and Graphic Design, combined with Jeremy’s background in Physics, Math and Art would give them the skills they’d need to succeed. Of course, it took a lot more than skills… it also took time and persistence. Despite encouraging feedback early on, it wasn’t until 2014 that the Math Antics series started becoming popular enough to ensure its continuation. This was largely due to the growing popularity of YouTube as a platform for educational content.
Since then, Rob and Jeremy have continued making new math videos for their collection on YouTube and on the Math Antics website. It takes them a long time to make each lesson, but they believe that high quality is worth the extra time and effort. They now have more that 70 videos available for anyone to watch, and in 2019, the Math Antics YouTube channel officially reached one-million subscribers! Rob and Jeremy hope to continue making new math lessons so that Math Antics is even more helpful to students around the world.
Our Company & Goals
Math Plus Motion LLC is basically just as small as when we first started. Currently, we (Rob and Jeremy) still handle all aspects of our business including video production, web design and all customer support.
Our goal remains the same as well… to provide great resources that make math a little easier for everyone. We’ve heard from many students who have struggled and we know that math anxiety is a real thing. It’s our sincere hope that our videos will reduce the stress of learning math by making it easier to understand and by keeping it fun and lighthearted. 🙂
